New Writing by and about Women Nurtured by Fallen Angel Theatre

For many years Fallen Angel Theatre Company has been a strong advocate and support for new writing by and about Irish and British Women.  We have served as a platform and a home for New York City based writers to develop and nurture their plays, including Barbara Hammond's Eva the Chaste from The Eva Trilogy and Honor Molloy's Maiden Voyages set in the Rotunda Hospital Dublin.  To continue with our nurturing mission we are formally announcing we have a new and more structured program in development. Full details of which will be announced soon.
To kickstart our project for our 2018/2019 Season we will be selecting a play by 2 different playwrights and host a developmental workshop with each writer.  Fallen Angel will provide a two day workshop with director, actors, dramaturg support, an especially invited audience for a private reading, all in a supportive, and nurturing environment.
The goal of this program will be to provide a mutually beneficial experience not only for Fallen Angel, but also for the selected recipients, giving writers an opportunity to work with an experienced New York City based off Broadway company. A Perfect Existence

BIO: Lesley Scammell received a fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts for her first play, Make Me an Angel and spent the next three years writing for several theatre companies; Garter Lane Arts Center, Waterford, Ireland; Bluebarn Theatre in Omaha, NE and Circle Rep in Seattle, WA before returning to New York to do an MFA in Playwriting at The Actors Studio Drama School at The New School. Lesley’s plays have been seen at Luna Stage, The Shooting gallery, MCC Theatre and New Dramatists in New York, Show of Strength Theatre in Bristol, England, Blue Barn Theatre in Omaha and Circle Rep in Seattle. Her plays have had readings and workshops at The Shooting Gallery, MCC and New Dramatists in New York City. The German Lullaby, a short film for which she wrote the screenplay, aired on the BBC Film Network, received Best Short film awards in the following festivals; 2008 International Film Festival, England; 2008 Reelheart International Film Festival, Toronto; Silver Award Best Short International Filmmakers; Honorable mentions in New York Downtown Short Film Festival 2008; and Accolade Awards 2007. She has been a finalist for EST’s Marathon, a Jerome Fellowship, and a Princess Grace Award. She recently attended the 2017 Great Plains Theatre Conference with A Perfect Existence. Lesley is a 2018 recipient of an Individual Artist Fellowship from the New Jersey Council on the Arts

On March 8th 2018, we celebrate International Women’s Day.
Today, tenacious women and brave men from around the world raise their voices louder than ever
and join forces in the fight for our rights as women.

Today is a day that we recognize our own individual struggles, but also the battles braved
by the courageous women that went before us, the work they did to give us the opportunities
we have today. Inspirational women, both in history and today, should continue to inspire us to
achieve not only equality, but greatness. Gloria Steinem, world-renowned feminist, journalist and
activist once explained "The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist
nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights".
It’s true how the saying goes: “Traveling alone you’ll go faster, but traveling together you’ll get further”.

We hear of “The Pay Gap”, the “#MeToo”, “Time’s Up” and “PressForProgress” movements.
These movements remind the world that we won’t be silenced in fighting for what we believe in.  
That's why we celebrate a day like today. We must continue our support of women everywhere:
old women, young women, rich women, poor women, women of every colour, race, religion,
nationality, sexuality and everything in between. We fight together, for each other.

And today above all days, we at Fallen Angel Theatre ask you to support women in theatre
and all the hard work they do. Female directors, female playwrights, female actors,
we all work together to project our voice and stand up for what we believe in.

While working as an actress in London, Glaswegian born Sharman Macdonald wrote her first play, When I Was A Girl, I Used to Scream and Shout, and it was first performed at The Bush Theatre in London in 1984.  It won the Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright that year, before transferring to the West End for a highly successful run.

Embracing her Scottish culture and wit, Sharman Macdonald’s When I Was A Girl I Used To Scream and Shout is a bitingly funny, delicately crafted, memory play exploring the parallel growing pains of a mother and daughter. Set in 1983, the play takes a stripped and honest look at the relationship between childless, unmarried Fiona and her crisp, divorced mother Morag, with whom she is sharing a Scottish beach holiday. As the play unfolds we discover it was in the very same resort where at least a decade previously, the young Fiona struggling with an imposed view of religion and sexuality, deliberately got pregnant to prevent Morag's remarriage and her mother's one chance of happiness.

By turns funny and painful, the play is also typical of several of Macdonald’s later plays, in that it explores ambiguities and tension in domestic life. When I Was A Girl I Used to Scream and Shout gave Macdonald the distinction for some time of being the only female playwright in London’s West End apart from Agatha Christie. She owed much to the late Alan Rickman for it’s original discovery. Rickman was in 1984 a reader for the Bush’s New Writing Program, picked it from the unsolicited pile, gave it to the Theatre and said it should be put on immediately. Mr. Rickman later co-wrote with Ms. Macdonald the 1997 film adaptation of her play Winter Guest, which he also directed.
